Health Outreach Baseline Project

Country: Ethiopia
Sector: Health Systems, Nomadic Communities

Background:
Our client needed granular, localized data on health access among nomadic and semi-nomadic communities in the arid Afar and Somali regions of Ethiopia. Existing national health datasets lacked reach into these mobile populations, creating blind spots in service delivery planning.

Approach:
We deployed mobile data collection teams on motorcycles and camels, covering 34 hard-to-reach kebeles. Enumerators, recruited locally and trained in basic health protocols, used GPS-enabled tablets to capture data on health-seeking behavior, distance to facilities, immunization coverage, maternal care, and traditional healing practices.

We also used participatory mapping with elders to understand seasonal migration routes and health barriers.
